Northern Lights Festival Boréal:
New things to see and do at Festival 2013!
The word is already out that NLFB’s 2013 lineup is packed with all kinds of great music. With feature artists like Serena Ryder, Buck 65, Kathleen Edwards, The Good Family and many more, the musical roster features an exciting diversity of styles and sounds. The festivities will take place between July 5th and 7th. Of course, the acclaimed musicians make the event a spectacle not to be missed, but there are many other interesting things happening at this year`s festival that make it truly unique. The event is not only a celebration of music and art, but also of community, creativity and craftsmanship.
Festival 2013 will give music lovers a chance to learn more about the instruments that create the sounds we love so much. Instrument makers such as Humco Instruments will be on-site, demonstrating how quality guitars and other instruments are made, maintained and repaired. Humco Instruments, and others such as Branch Flutes will demonstrate how instruments can be built with supreme craftsmanship, while using materials that promote environmental sustainability. NLFB`s Family Area will even include ukulele building workshops for youngsters, and some lucky kids will get to take home their very own ukulele.
NLFB has always placed an importance on providing quality entertainment for kids & families, and 2013 is no exception. The Family Area will include face painting, arts & crafts, inflatable amusements, and many fantastic family entertainers. This year`s festival will also include The Snake Lady, who brings over 25 exotic animals and more than 15 species of snakes, lizards, and turtles for kids young and old to interact with. Among this year`s family entertainers will also be Cindy Cook, creator of the award winning series Time to Read and regular host on Canada’s most popular children’s series, Polka Dot Door.
The festival`s Arts Village has become known as an eclectic showcase of visual artists from across Northern Ontario. This year, the area will be coordinated and curated by Myths & Mirrors Community Arts. “We wanted to make the Arts Village even more interactive and diverse,” says Festival Director Max Merrifield, “Myths & Mirrors seemed like the perfect fit. We’re very excited to see what they’ve been working on.” Myths & Mirrors has assembled a lineup of circus artists, installation artists, painters, sculptors, and more that is guaranteed to be a delight. Also, NLFB`s Stage Painters will be actively creating unique pieces of artwork alongside festival stages, inspired by the sights and sounds of the event.
In 2012, NLFB brought back musical cruises, where festival-goers could experience intimate musical performances aboard the Cortina Cruise, on Lake Ramsey. NLFB organizers thought the cruise was such a great addition to the festival atmosphere that they have decided to do it once again. Access to the cruise performances is free for weekend pass holders, and $10 for all other patrons.
“Pulling off a great festival is definitely all about booking fantastic artists, but it’s also about many other details that make the event truly distinct and create a sense of community within the festival grounds,” says Festival Director Max Merrifield. With a great weather forecast and a lot of buzz surrounding the event, the festival promises to be the success NLFB staff are counting on.
