Do you want to make media?

Do you believe that our movements for social change not only need actions and organizing, but also autonomous media infrastructure with a mandate to foreground questions of social justice and the environment, and the experiences of ordinary people?

Do you think that community requires conversation, and conversation requires challenging the persistent exclusion of certain voices and marginalization of certain groups of people?

If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," the Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op would like to invite you to our first meeting after the summer break. We will be getting together in Meeting Room #1 of the Mackenzie Street branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library at 10am on Wednesday, September 17th.

The Media Co-op is a national network of collectives focused on producing and promoting grassroots journalism and other sorts of independent media. As the Sudbury working-group gears up for the fall, we are particularly interested in involving people who are already connected to efforts to change Sudbury and the world for the better. Yes, we know that you -- like us -- are probably already committed to lots of other things and extremely busy, but we believe that alternative media can only thrive if it is grounded in movements, and movements will only benefit from having vibrant alternative media infrastructure in our community.

Our plans over the next little while depend a lot on how much energy people have. We have visions of doing an event and a couple of workshops but we have made no firm decisions yet. Plus, we are always looking to produce and to encourage new content. Come on out and share your ideas!

If you are interested in doing some grassroots journalism but aren't quite sure how, we'd be happy to offer you support. We can even pay for certain kinds of journalistic pieces under some circumstances. We're also hoping to get some new folks involved in the editorial side of things. And if you already have other media skills that you want to share -- from writing incisive commentary to taking great pictures to producing short informative videos using only your phone -- we'd love to meet you and figure out how we can collaborate.

Even if you can't make the meeting, it would be great to hear from you! Email us at grassrootssudburymedia@gmail.com.

And finally, at the Sudbury working-group, while we're open to many kinds of content and not just to original, written, grassroots journalism, we certainly would love to be able to publish more of that -- check out this document from the national level of The Media Co-op for some pointers on what we're looking for: http://www.mediacoop.ca/writersguide.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
