MEDIA RELEASE: Gender Inclusive Cities Sudbury 2014 – Thursday, December 4

Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.

Where do we feel safe/unsafe and why? Join us for a tour of the city and embark upon a participatory safety audit being hosted by Canadian, Kenyan & Tanzanian volunteers in Canada World Youth's Youth Leaders in Action exchange program in Sudbury.

This event is taking place as part of Canada World Youth's 7th year of holding youth exchange programs in Sudbury. This year's Women's Exchange volunteers are working with local constituents to bring the city one step closer to contributing to Millennium Development Goal #3: Promoting gender equality and empowering women. A cooperative effort with local organizations and individuals, this workshop is free, open for anyone, and includes 3 main components:

A TALK How do we understand gender-based violence? How can we effectively incorporate all genders in this discussion? What do we want to improve about Sudbury's public spaces?

A WALK Youth volunteers and local organizations have mapped routes to guide discussion about making improvements for the city and its citizens. Participants will express their individual feelings of safety and responses will be recorded by youth volunteers.

A DEBRIEF & EVALUATION Now what? After defining the problem, discussing solutions and hearing local voices, how can we ensure that this work goes somewhere? All participants will be asked to complete a survey about the audit.

Date:  Thursday, December 4
Time: 5:00PM – 8:00PM
Location: Main Library Branch, 74 McKenzie Street

Hot drinks will be provided.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
