MEDIA RELEASE: aboutface.2 comes to Cambrian’s Open Studio

Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.

SUDBURY – Being part of the aboutface project completely changed Brittney Smith’s ideas about homeless people.

“What I've learned through being part of aboutface is to never judge a book by its cover,” the third-year Cambrian College graphic design student says. “Before this project, I thought homeless people chose that lifestyle for themselves. Unfortunately, most of the time there is no choice. My perspective on life has changed completely.”

The aboutface project began in fall 2013, when a group of students, faculty and alumni of the College’s graphic design program spent three nights photographing and recording stories from clients of the Samaritan Centre. The series challenges perceptions about the disadvantaged, homeless and poor in our community.

aboutface.2, a new series of photos, launches at Cambrian’s Open Studio February 12 with a reception at 6:30 p.m.

“My experience with approaching homeless people was surprisingly refreshing,” says Smith. “They were genuine, funny and positive. They opened up their entire lives to us, which I respected and appreciated.”

aboutface.2 is on display at The Open Studio, 93 Cedar St., from February 12 to March 7 (Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m.). Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

For more information, search aboutface.2 on Facebook.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
