MEDIA RELEASE: reThink Green Challenges Greater Sudbury to Commute Sustainably

Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.

reThink Green is officially the new home of the Sudbury Commuter Challenge.

“We had the opportunity to take over the Sudbury Commuter Challenge this year, and we are thrilled to offer it to the community” said Rebecca Danard, Executive Director of reThink Green. “Greater Sudbury has actively participated in the Commuter Challenge in the past, and we can’t wait to help grow the reach and impact of this great program.”

The Sudbury Commuter Challenge is part of the week-long national Commuter Challenge. The event runs during World Environment Week, which will be June 4-10, 2017. The Commuter Challenge is a friendly competition that encourages Canadians to leave their cars at home, and find alternate methods of transportation to their workplace. Walking, cycling, carpooling/ride-sharing, taking transit, and telecommuting are all great options. Prizes will be awarded for a variety of categories, including most kilometres logged, and most participants per workplace.

The Sudbury Commuter Challenge fits well with the goals of Green Economy North, Sudbury’s business sustainability program.

“The Sudbury Commuter Challenge is a fun way for businesses and organizations to engage in sustainable transportation,” said Richard Eberhardt, Program Manager for Green Economy North. “We already have a large network of businesses working to make their operations more environmentally friendly, and we know many of them will enjoy taking on the challenge.”

In addition to the traditional workplace Commuter Challenge, reThink Green is also offering the Faith Commuter Challenge. This pilot program, facilitated by Faith and the Common Good, encourages faith communities to take alternate modes of transportation to and from their places of worship. The Faith Commuter Challenge will run from June 2-11, 2017, allowing two full weekends of opportunities to commute to worship.

All interested businesses, organizations, faith communities, and individuals are encouraged to register for the Commuter Challenge of their choice. Registration is open, and can be accessed through the Sudbury Commuter Challenge website: www.sudburycommuterchallenge.ca

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
