The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.

story ideas to test the system
1. Several of us here at Kootenay Coop Radio are working on a long-term project "Revisioning the Great Catastrophe, 1914-1945." In connection with that, I have done several historical pieces about Deskaheh at the League of Nations and the imposition of band council democracy at Akwasasne. It's an appropriate story (or two) for Remembrance Day. I'd like to find someone I can interview about it.
2. Sinixt people have been declared "extinct for the purposes of the Indian Act" because their original lands spanned the Canada-US border. They are now on their way back from this administrative form extinction and have started land claims proceedings. Their lawyer, David Aaron is a local candidate for mayor; appointed spokesperson Marilyn James does a show for KCR; headman Bob Campbell goes back and forth between here and Colville as many of them do, but has a local number.
3. Anti-uranium mining activists here have been watching events in Ontario, especially at Sharbot Lake, where Chief Bob Lovelace was arrested for contempt of court and a broadly based "settler" coalition has held a People's Inquiry into uranium mining. The First Nations and mining focus brings the KI councillors into view. They too were arrested for contempt of court. Platinum mining is the occasion here, but the real issue is "Duty to consult" which was the subject of a two-hour town hall meeting sponsored by APTN--and several court cases.

I have two story ideas for this month, both related to First Nations:
1. Bear River: 1 of 2 Mikmaw reserves out of 36 across Maritimes that have not sold out their treaty rights to fishing, despite pressure from DFO and commercial fisheries. Allied with non-native fishers that also wish to practice sustainable small scale fishing. have not signed on to DFO food fishing industry.
2. Afton First Nation, by Pictou Landing: Recent toxic dumping in th area. Kevin has visited recently and has lots of stories about unnatural deaths, blisters and sores on the skin. I'm thinking of visiting there next month, if Kevin is going again.
3. Beach privatization in Annapolis Valley. Native communities will have to enter relationship with US company in order to go clamming on the beach.
