MEDIA RELEASE: Eat Local Sudbury Launches "We Want Northern Chicken" Campaign

Official Launch of the We Want Northern Chicken Campaign

On Feb 1st Eat Local Sudbury launched the We Want Northern Chicken Campaign to raise awareness about chicken production regulation in Ontario and more importantly the North.

Northern Ontario farmers faces different challenges than those in Southern Ontario. Distance, lack of infrastructure and resulting higher cost make it harder for Northern farmers to compete.

Chicken farmers in Northern Ontario are producing under 0.5% of our peoples’ chicken consumption each year. That’s half the amount that ONE average chicken farmer in the South produces, and only enough local chicken for one day a year!

Eat Local Sudbury has decided to carry Southern Ontario quota chicken from an independent poultry farmer in our store. Each time someone purchases a piece of chicken they will be asked to sign a postcard addressed to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural affairs, expressing their desire to see changes to the supply management system in support of farmers, specifically in Northern Ontario.

We will work with Sustain and the Practical Farmers, to support and promote simultaneously all the campaigns about the chicken supply management system in Ontario.

We are looking for other partners across the province to support and promote the campaign. There are many ways to be involved, but we would like to suggest the following:

·         Order We Want Northern Chicken Postcards from us to have people in your communities sign onto the campaign

·         Hand out We Want Northern Chicken brochures

·         Educate yourself and others about the supply management system in Ontario, and challenges for small farmers through our website, flockingoptions.ca and practicalfarmers.ca

·         Spread the word to your media contacts about our campaign

·         “Like” our Facebook page  and follow us on Twitter to engage daily in the conversation

·         Sign the petition on flockingoptions.ca

And most of all : Buy Chicken and Support Change at Eat Local Sudbury.

If you know if any other partners, organizations or interested parties that should involved in the campaign, please spread the word.

If you have any ideas, questions or inquiries, please direct them to chicken@eatlocalsudbury.com.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
