APRIL 22 IS EARTH DAY – DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON TO MAKE SUDBURY GREENER?

Local Green Groups connect at Green Gathering

Do you know about the project connecting gardeners with food banks?  Or the new equipment farmers can lease to extend their growing season and grow more local food?  Did you know that 100,000 native trees and shrubs will be planted this year to keep regreening Sudbury?  Have you heard about the Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels Project empowering citizens to help keep our lakes and waterways clean and healthy?  Or the bike exchanges and bike safety courses you could participate in this spring? Did you know you could be a member of a new non-profit solar cooperative that will not only produce solar energy, but will support green community projects as well?

These are just a few of the exciting environmental projects happening in Greater Sudbury.  Local green groups had a chance to share information and ideas at the recent Spring Green Gathering, April 8.

The Green Gathering is a coming together of local green groups in Greater Sudbury to share information and ideas, collaborate on shared needs and joint events, and set common priorities and action items.

Green Gatherings are focused working meetings among representatives of active local green groups held every spring and fall.

Environmental issues are all interconnected.  Whatever their individual focus, together, local green groups agree on four top local priorities:

  • Supporting local food and agriculture
  • Keeping our natural environment healthy and protecting important green spaces
  • Protecting water quality and keeping our lakes and waterways clean and healthy
  • Supporting sustainable transportation:  walking, cycling, and transit

Important in their own right, these priorities also address Climate Change, and contribute to a liveable community.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
