NLFB 2013:

CELEBRATING LOCAL TALENT

Northern Lights Festival Boréal returns to Bell Park this July 5-7, with a highly acclaimed lineup, from all across Canada and beyond. Festival headliners include current superstar songstress Serena Ryder, roots music supergroup The Good Family, and hip-hop troubadour/poet Buck 65 (Rich Terfry). Several recent enhancements will accent the festival atmosphere: including intimate performances aboard the Cortina Cruise, an enhanced visual arts village, instrument builders and repair workshops. Further festival information can be found at www.nlfbsudbury.com.

NLFB presents some of the best in Canadian roots and modern music, however the festival has long-been a valuable outlet for local emerging artists.

“The amount of musical talent and variety in this city is astounding,” says Max Merrifield, Executive Director with the festival. “In some ways the event brings these artists out of the clubs and into the sunlight of the festival, where a whole new crowd is ready and waiting for new music,” he says.

Among the exciting local acts gracing the NLFB stages will be Marie-Claire et les Hula-Hoops, featuring the song writing of Marie-Claire Cronier. Think 60′s French yéyé meets psychedelic space rock with a splash of surf guitar. Cronier was the winner of Ontario Pop in 2012 and semi-finalist at the Festival International de la chanson de Granby next September. “They are certainly one of the most exciting new groups in the city, not only in the Francophone scene, but in general,” says NLFB Artistic Director Paul Loewenberg.

If you’ve stopped by The Townehouse Tavern on any particular night, there’s a good chance you’ve heard rugged roots music of Sam Cassio. Cassio performs solo but is also a member of indie rock outfit Coast Redwood, who will also be playing at the festival. His most recent project however, is ‘Murder Murder’, which pays homage to the old time murder ballad with a mix of traditional and original songs of darkness, betrayal, and tragedy. “I'm very excited to be playing the festival,” says Cassio, “It's one of my favorite weekends and I find myself looking forward to it all year.”

Although the festival is not typically known for booking classical acts, the talent and acclaim of The Silver Birch String Quartet is undeniable and NLFB had to have them. They have Juno nominations under their belt, and they recently became the official ‘string quartet in residence’ at Laurentian University. Not only will they deliver their own performances, but will also add musical colour to workshops and collaborations throughout the weekend.

With a lineup of fantastic locals, emerging acts from across the continent, and some eclectic, highly acclaimed headliners, NLFB makes an assertion as the musical event of the year for the North. Tickets are available online and at numerous outlets throughout the city. SEE YOU AT THE FEST!

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
