Mayor Marianne Matichuk proclaims September Arts Month in the City of Greater Sudbury.
"September highlights the beginning of an active arts season including Culture Day celebrations, bringing excitement, energy and creative spirit to our community," said the mayor as she signed the official document.
The Arts Month proclamation urges all citizens of the city to take time during September and the coming year to experience creativity and artistic expression in all its forms and "to support the Sudbury Arts Council's mandate to connect, communicate and celebrate the arts."
The arts community contributes more than $2.5 million annually to the local community.
September is a particularly busy month on the arts calendar with the Jazz Festival Sudbury, Cinefest, Le Froche concert at Bell Park, Culture Days (Sept. 27, 28 and 29), and the beginning of the Sudbury Theatre Centre, Theatre Cambrian and the Sudbury Symphony new seasons plus many others.
Vicki Gilhula, president of the Sudbury Arts Council, thanked the City of Greater Sudbury for its financial support that will enable the council to hire administrative staff.
The Sudbury Arts Council publishes a monthly events calendar, co-ordinates the ArtSpace at the South End Library, hosts monthly Arts After Five events, and plans special events such as Wordstock Sudbury, a literary festival.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
