The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is SSO Spirited
As the 13.14 Season Begins
September’s Concert features patriotic favourites and a performance by Nicole Li
Sudbury, ON September 23, 2013: SSO Music Director Victor Sawa returns to conduct the Sudbury Symphony and solo violinist Nicole Li on September 28 in a programme featuring the works of Smetana, Bruch and Canadian composer Claude Champagne as they pay tribute to the patriotic spirit.
Entitled Ma Vlast (My Homeland), Smetana composed his series of symphonic poems from 1874-1879 to depict the countryside, history and legends of Bohemia. The Orchestra tackles three of these in their September 28 performance, including the audience favourite, “Die Moldau.”
Nicole Li makes her Sudbury Symphony debut with Bruch’s Violin Concerto. At only 18, Nicole has placed first at the National Finals of the Canadian Music Competition seven times, and has performed with numerous other orchestras, including the Sherbrooke Orchestra, Toronto Sinfonietta, Brampton Symphony Orchestra, and as soloist on the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra’s BC Tour.
“Nicole is truly an incredible artist and performer,” the Symphony’s Executive Director, Dawn Cattapan, said. “Her passion for the violin is contagious, and with talent well beyond her years, she will be sure to amaze audiences, young and old.”
This spirited programme begins with an atmospheric work by Montreal-native Claude Champagne. Paysanna is a celebratory piece of music commissioned by the CBC in honour of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra will be the first orchestra to perform this piece in over a decade.
The September 28 concert also marks the last opportunity to buy tickets to the Getaway Your Way Raffle, with prizes including a choice of an all-inclusive trip to New Orleans, a Napa Valley wine country experience, or a custom sports fan getaway to catch your favourite NHL, NFL, MLB or NBA team live on the road or at home anywhere in North America. The draw for this raffle will take place in the second half of Saturday’s concert. Tickets are $20 each, or $50 for 3, with proceeds going to support the Northern Lights Festival Boreal and the Sudbury Symphony.
