The Sudbury Symphony Offers Tidings of Music and Joy This Holiday Season

Holiday concerts include animated film, local singers and dancers

Sudbury, ON Nov. 18: Two concerts filled with holiday favourites will warm the City of Sudbury on November 23, as the Sudbury Symphony presents SSO Joyful; it’s annual Christmas concert.

Sudbury Symphony Music Director, Maestro Victor Sawa will guide the Orchestra through a number of holiday favourites, including White Christmas, The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) and selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The main feature of both concerts will be The Bear, an animated film featuring the SSO performing the score live. This magical animated film tells the story of a young girl who accidentally drops her beloved teddy bear into the polar bear exhibit at the zoo, launching a remarkable friendship with bear-size complications!

In addition to the Orchestra, The Bear presents the narration talents of Pamela Teed; the conductor of the Bel Canto Chorus, and head of vocal studies in the School of Music at Cambrian College. The film will also showcase local high school student Aileen Brownlee, making her Sudbury Symphony Orchestra debut.

During the full-length performance at 8:00pm, the Sudbury Symphony will again be joined by Pamela Teed, performing some of her favourite Christmas songs.  A gifted vocalist, Pamela has performed across Ontario, in New York and Europe, including being featured in a public masterclass at Carnegie Hall. This performance is proudly presented by Bryston’s on the Park and Copy Copy.

The Orchestra’s performance venue, Glad Tidings, will be decked with a family concert of holiday singing, dancing and festive music at the hour-long 2:00pm family matinée, proudly presented by Tim Hortons and CTV. During the one-hour long family performance, Maestro Sawa will be joined by dancers from Arts North as he leads the SSO through a medley of Christmas carols and an audience sing-along. Before the concert, audience members young and old are invited to join Arts North for fun and festive art activities in the lobby.

Tickets for the November 23rd SSO Joyful 2:00pm performance begin at $5, with a family pass of 4 tickets available for $25. Tickets for the full-length SSO Joyful performance are $13-$42. For both concerts, tickets can be purchased by phoning the SSO at 705.673.1280 or online at sudburysymphony.com.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
