MEDIA RELEASE: BitterSweet: A tale of two Sudburys
Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.
SUDBURY – Cambrian College’s Graphic Design graduating class explores
Greater Sudbury’s bittersweet parallels in a new exhibit that runs throughout
April at the College’s Open Studio.
“The show revolves around questions, such as, ‘What keeps us going? What
makes us who we are? What makes a Sudburian a Sudburian?’,” Gaëtan Godin, a
student in the third-year class, says of the BitterSweet show. “The answer lies
within the bittersweet relationship we have with our city.”
BitterSweet is a collaboration between this year’s graduating class and the
broader Sudbury community. It examines the places, spaces, events and
circumstances that make the city a satisfying and a challenging place to live, work
and play. The public was invited to submit story pitches on the group’s Facebook
page and anonymously on the Graphic Design website.
“We are hoping this show can create a close relationship between all sectors of
our community through the place we all have in common – Sudbury,” Ron
Beltrame, Coordinator of the Graphic Design program, explains. “We’ve taken
the stories and quotes we felt either best reflected the concept of BitterSweet or
would resonate the most with the audience. The class has then put together an
exhibit of posters, reflecting the stories that have been selected.”
The response from the public has been tremendous.
“The great thing about BitterSweet is that the community is shaping the show,”
Godin notes. “It is their opinions that are inspiring the pieces, so hopefully at the
show’s launch, the public will be just as proud as the College and the students.
The responses are varied and some a little personal, which makes creating these
pieces a fun and exciting experience. It’s great to see the community so eager to
help out.”
