April Showcases the SSO in a New Light

Orchestra presents free series & combines music and visual art

Sudbury, ON April 16: The Sudbury Symphony isn’t your average orchestra. With a theme this season of “SSO Lively,” the Orchestra promised new and unique experiences that would reach the community in a whole new way. And withtwo big events left in the season, they’re sure to deliver.

The Orchestra will pilot The Black Rock Salon; a new outreach and education series, focused on “musically curious”adults on April 17, 2014. Hosted by the SpeakEasy (118 Durham Street), the free series promises to spark engagement, discussion and creativity from participants. The first event “Beyond the Score” will break down the fact and fiction behind classical music concerts to provide an introduction for anyone who has ever thought of attending a concert.

“One of the most common questions we get asked when people buy tickets is ‘What do I wear?’” SSO Executive Director Dawn Cattapan said. “Often, people have a notion that to come to a symphony concert, you need to act a certain way, or dress a certain way. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and Black Rock Salon will look at where these ideas came from, what you can expect and where the future of classical music could take us.”

“This is a really fresh way to learn about classical music,” Christian Robinson, SSO Concertmaster and one of the brains behind Black Rock Salon added. “People can grab a drink and it’s extremely relaxed and casual. We hope to remove some of the intimidation and confusion that can surround the concert experience.”

The SSO’s 13.14 season closes on April 26 with a presentation of music that takes inspiration from visual art. Not to be outdone, the Symphony has partnered with the Art Gallery of Sudbury to involve local artists in the creation process. During the second half of the concert, local artists Sarah King-Gold, Patricia Stenabaugh and Heather Topp will eachcreate a canvas live while the Orchestra performs Modest Mussorgsky’s signature work, Pictures at an Exhibition. Fittingly, the piece is about walking through an art gallery and viewing works of art.

“It just makes sense for this to happen,” Christian Robinson said. “The music is all about walking through an art gallery and looking at paintings. Showing the creative process in two different ways by pairing these amazing local artists with the music is going to create an experience that you won’t be able to get anywhere else.”

Tickets for the April 26 SSO Artsy 8:00pm performance are $13-$42 and can be purchased by phoning the SSO at705.673.1280 or online at sudburysymphony.com.
