SUDBURY – Cambrian College is adding to its course calendar with a few new programs for Fall 2014, including Design and Visual Arts, Independent Music Production, and Environmental Field Techniques.
“We’re excited about launching these new programs,” says Jean Brown, Interim Vice President, Academic. “They respond to the needs of our community and employers, as well as student demand. The music and arts programs will inform and support the growing arts landscape in Sudbury, and the Environmental Field Techniques program will help Cambrian graduates work in positions that address climate change and support environmental sustainability.”
The two-year Design and Visual Arts program offers students training in the foundational principles of design and creative thinking in the first year. During their second year of study, they focus on working in a mentored, project-based environment to develop their skills in painting, illustration, printmaking and mixed media.
Over the course of two semesters, the Independent Music Production program introduces students to the foundations of music, recording, editing and performance, and leads to an Ontario college certificate. It fuses a hands-on approach to small-scale, computer-based recording and editing with theory, as well as an examination of the business skills needed to successfully communicate and promote the end product.
The Environmental Field Techniques program familiarizes students with practical field experience to identify, measure and record environmental variables within various ecosystems. Students are also introduced to environmental regulations and policies. This three-semester program leads to an Ontario college certificate.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
