FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Green Party Greening Sudbury and Nickelbelt with Rain Barrels!

Sudbury, ON May 20, 2014

Residents who want to save money, care for their gardens, and protect the environment know that rain barrels help meet all three goals. The Sudbury and Nickelbelt Green Party riding associations are now accepting pre-sale orders as part of their truckload Rain Barrel sale. This fundraising event is scheduled for Saturday, June 7th at 1619 Second Street, Val Caron from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Rain barrels are $55 each and orders must be placed in advance of the sale, either online at www.RainBarrel.ca/gpra or by calling 705-858-6705.

Members of the new Nickel Belt Green Party are teaming up with Sudbury Green Party members to offer rain barrels to the community. As the first fundraising event for the party, it is appropriate that they are offering something that benefits the community and the environment. These reasonably-priced barrels divert water from storm drains, protecting neighbourhoods from flooding and reducing water use. Proceeds from the sale will support Green Party candidates in these riding associations. A tax receipt will be provided for a portion of the purchase.

Rain barrels capture and store chlorine-free and fluoride-free rain water from a home’s downspouts, making it ideal for flowers, vegetables, lawns, shrubs, and trees. Collected water can also be used to wash cars, clean floors, and even do laundry! These many uses can provide cost savings to every resident, especially those who pay to have water trucked in, use a well, or have a water meter installed. They can also provide water conservation opportunities, particularly during the dry summer months.

When ordering in advance of the sale, purchasers select the colour and model of their rain barrel, and add any accessories, such as downspout diverters and rain barrel stands. Each barrel is equipped with all the parts needed to put it together, so it can be collecting water in no time at all.

These environmentally friendly products were once used to transport fruits and vegetables, but now they have been repurposed and offer years of reliable service as rain barrels. Purchasing one not only saves residents money and helps the environment, but, with this rain barrel sale, it will also support Green Party candidates in the Sudbury and Nickel Belt ridings.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
