AT THE ART GALLERY OF SUDBURY

Aba Bayefsky: The Tattoo Series
Sept. 13 – Nov. 2, 2014

Canadian artist Aba Bayefsky’s (1923 – 2001) attraction to this subject matter – tattooed men and women – extended first and foremost from its startling imagery, especially in the Japanese context, where he found that the concept of tattooing was much different from that in North America. Bayefsky was drawn not only to the personal significance of the selection of design elements and the inking of the bodies, but he was also to the “exceptional beauty” of the artform. It was the fact of the form as a personal statement of being human, of the subjects turning themselves into their own artistic statements.

Sudbury Selections
Nov. 13, 2014 – Jan. 4, 2015

Established in 2003 as a fundraising exhibition, formerly known as Member's ChoiceSudbury Selections offers a unique opportunity to those in the community to "curate," while supporting the gallery.  The AGS/GAS pre-selects works from the permanent collection that reflect diversity in styles and mediums to pique the interest of those interested in sponsoring a work of art and thereby creating an exhibition that is unique with a shared theme of community involvement. Cost of sponsorship is $100.00 per artwork.

In this iteration of Sudbury Selections the AGS/GAS will be presenting many new “selections” drawn from its rarely seen collection of works of art on paper.

Opening receptions are as follows:

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.

The Sudbury working-group site is no longer being updated and has been archived.
