Majority of candidates support key items for a healthy community

Sudbury, October 21, 2014 – Seventy percent of all candidates completed a survey on key items for a green, healthy and engaged community, put together by twenty-two local groups active on these issues. Eight of ten mayoral candidates, and all front runners, completed the survey with 75% - 100% support for specific action items on sustainable transportation, water quality, natural environment, local food, and citizen engagement.
Full survey results can be viewed at sudburycandidates.ca, where citizens can also compare candidates’ platform statements on these and other issues.
Also available on the site are candidates’ websites, social media presence and contact info; candidates’ responses to other community surveys; videos of debates and town halls; links to the city election website and local media election websites; and a calendar of election dates.
Voters are encouraged to visit the site to get informed. In the first few days of internet voting, over 1000 people did just that.
Growing public support for a healthy community is reflected in many of the candidates’ platforms. Of seventy candidates, forty-four (63%) have platform statements available (that we are aware of), and of those 68% address citizen engagement, roughly 60% (57% - 64%) address sustainable transportation, water quality, and natural environment, and 25% address local food.
“It is encouraging to see that so many candidates realize the importance of these quality of life issues,” said Lilly Noble, Co-Chair of the Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury.
Citizens and community groups, including Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury, who hosts sudburycandidates.ca, look forward to meeting and working with the new Council on moving these important issues forward in the coming months.
