Challenge the City! -- Pushing for Positive Change at City Hall
Join the discussion of how we work to make our community better

SUDBURY, ONTARIO, November 19, 2014 – The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op invites you to Challenge the City!, a town hall discussion with local groups that take different approaches to pushing for change at city hall. It will be in the small back room at The Laughing Buddha (194 Elgin St.), from 7pm to 9pm, on Wednesday, December 3. The participating groups are the Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty, the Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury, and organized labour. There is no cost to attend the event and light snacks will be provided.

In this event, we look towards the new term of city council with a recognition that it is only through ongoing organizing in the community that Sudbury might become a more just and sustainable place. The participating groups focus on different issues and take different approaches, but share a commitment to pushing the City of Greater Sudbury to improve. The event will be an opportunity to have a public conversation about our different ways of working for change. Each panellist will share their group's experiences around strategies, tactics, failures, and successes, leading into a broader discussion among all who attend.

  • Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury is a grassroots network of citizen groups and individuals who share a vision of Greater Sudbury as a green, healthy and engaged community.
  • Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty is an anti-poverty organization that provides direct-action support work assisting individuals in their struggles with welfare, ODSP, housing, and employers, and that mounts campaigns responding to regressive government policies as they effect working people and people living in poverty.
  • The organized labour representative will either be from the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 4705, which represents workers at the city, or from the Sudbury and District Labour Council, which is labour's political voice at the local level in Sudbury.

We hope the event will provide an opportunity to share ideas, to start and renew conversations, to build relationships, and to strengthen all of our struggles. All are welcome!

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op (http://sudbury.mediacoop.ca) is part of a national network of collectives in different cities committed to producing, circulating, and promoting grassroots journalism and other independent media. We believe that social change can only succeed if there are media alternatives that are not driven by profit, that focus on both accuracy and on a commitment to justice, and that prioritize voices that are often marginalized. As such, we not only make and circulate media, but we work to build media-related capacity in the community, and occasionally organize public events that foster dialogue and relationship-building.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
