Plans underway for 2015 Mayor's Celebration of the Arts Awards
(Sudbury, January 22, 2015) Sudbury's arts community will be celebrated Thursday, May 21 at the Vale Cavern at Science North. Mayor Brian Bigger will present bursaries to the recipients of the second annual Mayor's Celebration of the Arts Awards.
The celebration, organized under the auspices of the Sudbury Arts Council, with the co-operation of the Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury (ROCS), honours artists and heightens the profile of the arts in the community while raising money for artist bursaries. Mayor Bigger has kindly added his name to this event to increase its profile.
The 2014 laureates were visual artist Heather Topp (Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts) and playwright Matthew Heiti (Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist.)
“The inaugural Celebration last year was very successful,” says Sudbury Arts Council president Linda Cartier. “Building on that success, we are adding the Award for Outstanding Mid-Career Artist. Three awards, totalling $7,500 in bursaries, will be presented this year. The funding for the bursaries comes from fundraising activities and generous corporate and private donations.”
Sponsors to date for the 2015 event are Fidelity Investments Canada, Science North, Copy Copy, Studio 123 and BMO. Additional sponsors are being recruited for the May event.
The Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts, which comes with a $3,500 bursary, will be presented to a professional artist for his or her exceptional contribution to the arts during its career spanning more than 20 years through an extensive body of works in one or several disciplines, as well as through her/his contribution over time to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community.
The Award for Outstanding Mid‐Career Artist and a $2,500 bursary will be presented to a mid‐career artist with 10 to 20 years of experience, for his or her sustained efforts to pursue a professional career in the arts and to produce new works, while contributing to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community.
