Gallery 6500 calls for artists' submissions for new exhibition
Sudbury Arts Council is delighted to announce one of its projects, Gallery 6500, has successfully been launched and has established its own board of directors. They are calling for art submissions foran exhibition to be held this fall.
Gallery 6500, established with the generosity of Local 6500 of the Steelworkers' Union at the union hall, is a repurposed corridor for exhibiting visual arts. It is dedicated to exhibit art that strengthens links between artists, the labour movement and our city’s diverse communities.
The gallery's dedication is to art as an agent of progressive social change, and to enhance Sudbury’s reputation as an important union cultural centre.
“The board of Gallery 6500 represents a broad spectrum of the community; artists, professionals and unionists, says artist Oryst Sawchuk, who as a member of the Sudbury Arts Council, was involved with the project from the beginning.
“It is just beginning its work , there are many steps ahead, but everything we’ve achieved to date is thanks to the commitment of participating artists, Union Local 6500 board members, volunteers and our many other tireless supporters. We thank them for continuing to drive us forward.”
An exhibit of socially relevant art will open Oct. 18 and run until December. Artists are invited to submit their work for jury selection. Applications will be accepted from Aug. 24 to Sept. 2.
A letter of introduction with a brief profile of the artwork, as well as jpegs of the work can be send to jo.mac@eastlink.ca. Artists can submit up to three pieces of art.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
