Event: Turtle Crossing Sign Unveiling
Date: May 6, 2016
Time: 10:30am
Location: Southview Drive, between Robinson and Kelly Lakes (see map)

Please join the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee as we unveil turtle
crossing road signs in the Junction Creek watershed.

The stewardship committee has taken a close look at turtle populations in
the Junction Creek watershed over the past several years, with the
financial assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
With the help of community volunteers, we identified one stream crossing
in particular where turtles are often struck and killed by vehicles. In an
effort to reduce collisions, the committee has purchased road crossing
signs from the Toronto Zoo. This was made possible through a generous
donation from the earthdancers, a local dance troop that supports
environmental initiatives in Sudbury and beyond. In partnership with the
City of Greater Sudbury these signs will be installed along Southview
Drive between Robinson and Kelly Lakes, to help warn drivers of possible
turtles on the road.

Turtle populations are declining in Ontario. One of the leading causes of
turtle population declines is mortality due to road collisions. These
collisions most often kill reproductive females as they search for a place
to lay their eggs on roadsides.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
