MEDIA RELEASE: GIANT SUNFLOWER STACKS OVER SUDBURY Contest Winner’s Sunflower Was Over Twice Average Canadians Height
Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.
The rain held out on Saturday October 1st and the weather turned sunny. It was a great day to be at the Market and check out everything ‘sunflower’ at Sudbury’s first Giant Sunflower Competition. With big sunflowers, small sunflowers and some sunflowers that appear to have cross-pollinated, well over 20 participants came out for their flowers to be judged.
Sudbury’s Community Garden Network thanks everyone that participated in the Russian Mammoth Sunflowers growing contest, their admirers who came to judge the event and all volunteers.
Congratulations to all the winners:
1. Tallest Sunflower: Delki Dozzi (Ward 1) Community Garden - 141"
2. Largest Sunflower Head: Garson Community Garden - 18.5"
3. Children's Tallest Sunflower: Danica 116"
4. Children's Largest Sunflower Head: Lillian A. - 15"
Prizes were donated by Toppers Pizza Canada and Eat Local Sudbury.
This event is the first for Sudbury’s Community Garden Network to create awareness forthe great network of gardeners that exist in this city and the community gardens that are on offer. We hope to increase our reach and create a larger network of gardeners for resource and information sharing.
