The Laurentian Concert Band, directed by Sally Lesk, presents its concert “Perfect Pairings” on Sunday, December 4 at 2:00 pm in the Auditorium of the Alphonse Raymond Building on campus at Laurentian University. The band is very excited to also showcase its special guest, the Sudbury Guitar Orchestra with its director Dr. Matthew Gould.
The Laurentian Concert Band consists of 39 woodwinds, brasses, and percussionists, many of whom are students majoring in music at the university, along with several others who are studying in other Laurentian programs while continuing to keep music in their lives. Rounding out the membership are a number of community musicians from all walks of life. What they all have in common is a love of performing some of the best repertoire written for concert band.
This upcoming concert will transport you from the heart of a snowstorm in Minnesota to a flurry of Gypsy dances, from the old English countryside to the high seas, and from Edgar Allan Poe's chilling poem “The Raven” to the outback of Australia. You will hear works from composers from J. S. Bach to Ralph Vaughan Williams and Percy Grainger. For the first time ever, the band is performing a number of selections that feature the piano in a prominent role. The Sudbury Guitar Orchestra is a new group formed under the auspices of the Sudbury Guitar Society and directed by guitarist Dr. Matthew Gould. The core members are Cambrian College and Laurentian University students, past and present, who perform a variety of music from popular songs to classical masterpieces. The music is often arranged for the group and is adapted for any level of guitarist from the community to participate. Notable performances include Warehouse Jamz for D'Addario Canada, annual appearances at the Guitar Alla Grande Festival in Ottawa and Gatineau, and Cambrian College Picks-N- Sticks concert featuring guitar and percussion.
Tickets are available at the door, $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. All proceeds go to the Laurentian Percussion Fund. Parking is across the street from the venue for $2 an hour, so please bring some loonies and toonies.
