Follow Eddy’s journey as he leaves his East End home in London to encounter love, and battle the plague that characterized Thatcher’s Britain.
Using language that is as rich as Shakespeare spoken in a cockney slang, Steven Berkoff (the bad boy of British theatre) turns the classic into a hilarious retelling of Oedipus Rex, making the tragedy a comedy, turning the expectations of society upside down, and ultimately transforming this tragic tale into a love story.
Will the family avoid the prophecy of the fortune-teller at a fun fair? Will Eddy kill his father and marry his mother? Will Eddy pluck his eyes out in shame and disgust of his actions? Or might he come to another conclusion?
With a set designed by Bob Ivey, and lighting by Ken Salah, and production by Cambrian College Theatre Arts Technical Production Program, GREEK is directed by Patricia Tedford and features senior acting students in Thorneloe University’s Theatre Arts and Motion Picture Arts Program.
“It’s certainly relevant to current political events – it slaps you in the face,” says Cast member Cass-Grenier. “Don’t bring the kids!” Director Patricia Tedford remarks: “In these uncertain political times, this play is as politically important as when it was first written. As we try to fathom the shocking reality of Brexit and the world of Trump, it reminds us all to laugh, and of the redemptive nature of love.”
Performances are at the Ernie Checkeris Theatre, Thorneloe University on the Laurentian University campus: March 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 at 7:30 PM and March 18 at 2:00 PM.
Tickets are $10 for students/seniors and $20 regular admission, and can be purchased by calling (705) 673-1730 ext 0, at the door, or online at http://thorneloetheatre.eventbrite.ca/.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
