Saturday, May 18: Sudbury Cyclist Union Bike Repair Barbeque

Time: 2pm to 6pm
Location: 150 King Street, Sudbury

Spring is (debatably) here again!

Time to tune up your trusty bike and enjoy food and music with good friends and fellow cyclists that you may not have seen for a while during the snow season.

As in the past, there will be tools on hand for your use (but you're welcome to bring your own, the more the merrier!), and advice and/or assistance from those more mechanically inclined in attendance, and a barbeque on site to prepare the yummy food that you will no doubt bring because this is a potluck and you like to share.

New for this year, local band WHICKED BRIDGE will be coming out to play for us, so if you just hate having to go out and have fun with friends, food, bikes, and music, you should probably just stay home :P

Matters to be discussed include our ongoing direct action support work, including for community start up and maintenance needs; setting up an S-CAP drop in space and much more. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Children are welcome to attend, or childcare support is available upon request.

S-CAP is a direct-action anti-poverty organization based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We provide direct-action support work assisting individuals in their struggles with welfare and ODSP, housing, employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order to meet their needs. In addition, we mount campaigns against and support educational work about regressive government policies as they effect working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of people to organize themselves. We believe in the power of resistance!

WHERE TO MEET: Farmers Market, South Parking Lot (Elgin @ Massachusetts Ln)
WHEN TO MEET: 10:45am to go over route and assign marshals

WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH: The abolition of Monsanto, firstly. Secondly, the end of misinformation and disinformation through not labeling foods that contain GMO ingredients. Thirdly, the education of the public regarding what's actually IN their food through discussion, debate, flyers/handouts, and social media. And also information on how to keep Monsanto poison off our plates and out of our bodies through organic gardening and supporting local farmers who are being put out of business by big-box corporations.

RALLY ROUTE: Down Elm to Paris, down Van Horne to Brady, down Larch to Minto and Memorial Park.

****♥ In this march, we advocate that everyone be non-violent and kind as well. We recommend non-violent and friendly communication towards any and all police and law enforcement officers.

We have many important messages about Monsanto (and other things like fluoride, big Pharma, etc) with which to inform the public, and we are committed that these important messages be given priority. We want as many posters and as much video camera footage as possible to be posted all over the Internet. We are also committed that as few of our fellows marching as possible get hurt, none if possible.

Thus, we are peaceful and accused of being polite even. We are non-violent, and yet we are also non-compliant in leaving the march until our message has made the front page of major newspapers, N.Y. Times & L.A. Times. Our message will be heard on ABC, CBS, NBC, CTV, CBC, and CNN. ♥****

I'm looking for people to collaborate with: speakers, demonstrators for workshops, strong leaders in our community. Let's take a stand and fight for our Earth! ♥

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
