Monday, February 3: Support Anti-Poverty Demands at Community Services Meeting
Time: 4pm to 6pm
Location: Room C-11, Tom Davies Square (200 Brady Street, Sudbury)
The Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty is looking for people to come to the Community Service Committee meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 4:00 – 6:00 at Tom Davies Square, room C-11. Near the middle/end of the agenda is the city staff’s report back on issues arising from S-CAP’s report to them two weeks ago.

It looks from their report like they might be raising the amounts available to people on ODSP and OW through the discretionary funds. The funds are still discretionary, so people may still find them harder to acquire than when people knew they could count on Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) funds, but at least there should be a possibility people can acquire them and we will continue to fight for people on this.
There might be movement as well on creating an emergency homeless shelter although from the report it is not clear whether the new beds would be run on the same restrictive policies the Salvation Army shelter is run on or whether they could be available on the inclusive, drop-in manner that S-CAP is advocating for. Although we will be unable to speak at the meeting we will be taking a checklist in to the committee meeting. Our checklist argues that an emergency homeless shelter must:
- be open to anyone at anytime
- allow drop in flexibility
- allow people to sleep
- nonreligious
- an alternative to current shelter space with a separate entrance and separate staff
- free (no vouchers, no need to register, no process involved, no ID necessary)
- dependable – it must be open throughout the winter.
- immediately implemented
Please come out and show your support for us at the committee meeting. If you can’t, phone or email your council members before hand.
S-CAP will be having our regular meeting starting around 6:30 at the Labour Council Office -- see next entry.

Monday, February 3: Meeting of Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty

Location: Offices of the Sudbury and District Labour Council (Suite 209
upstairs in 109 Elm Street, which is across the street from the Native
Friendship Centre)
Matters to be discussed include the need for an emergency homeless shelter, updating on the minimum wage campaign, discussion of community policing, and our ongoing support work.
The venue is wheelchair accessible. Children are welcome to attend, or childcare support is available upon request.
S-CAP is a direct-action anti-poverty organization based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We provide direct-action support work assisting individuals in their struggles with welfare and ODSP, housing, employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order to meet their needs. In addition, we mount campaigns against and support educational work about regressive government policies as they effect working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of people to organize themselves. We believe in the power of resistance!
La coalition contre la pauvreté de Sudbury (S-CAP) est un organisme d’action directe luttant contre la pauvreté. Elle se trouve à Sudbury en Ontario.
Le travail de la coalition se base dans l’action directe et consiste à apporter de l’aide aux individus dans leurs luttes pour l’assistance sociale, l’invalidité, le logement, l’emploi et à les aider à faire face aux gens qui leur refusent ce à quoi ils ont droit pour rencontrer leurs besoins. De plus, la coalition fait des compagnes de sensibilisation et de dénonciation par rapport aux politiques gouvernementales régressives quant à leurs effets sur les travailleurs et travailleuses et les personnes vivant dans la pauvreté.
