Sunday, March 2: Sudbury International Women's Day Event

Time: 1pm to 4pm
Location: Howard Johnson Hotel (50 Brady Street, Sudbury)
Admission: $2 or donation of personal hygiene products for the women's shelter

Join the Sudbury and District Labour Council’s Women’s Committee for their annual International Women’s Day celebration on Sunday March 2, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.  The Event will take place at the Howard Jonson Hotel, 50 Brady Street.  Cost of admission is $2 or a donation of personal hygiene products for the women’s shelter.

Organized locally by the Palestinian Solidarity Working Group, Israeli Apartheid Week/IAW 2014 is a series of campus events, including classroom lectures, guest speakers, and film showings in cities around
the world.

Israeli Apartheid Week’s main objective is to educate the public about the Palestinian people’s struggle against the apartheid nature of Israeli state policies towards the Palestinian people, including separate roads for Palestinians and Israelis, separate schools, separate neighbourhoods, separate and unique identity cards, and even separate Palestinian and Israeli license plates.

The apartheid character of Israeli state policies is undeniable and has long been recognized by those who have long fought for human rights, like Nelson Mandela, who once said: "Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinian people."

Events during IAW will highlight some of these successes along with informing people about the many injustices that continue to make the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign so crucial in the battle to end Israel's apartheid practices.

Sudbury events will include a Palestinian educational film series at the Laurentian University campus, featuring the movies “Occupation 101,” “Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land,” “Jaffa: The Orange’s Clockwork,” and the Oscar-nominated “Five Broken Cameras.” Discussions will follow the film showings.

A literature table featuring educational materials outlining the struggle of the Palestinian people will be centrally located in the campus Student Centre, daily from March 3-6.

First launched in Toronto in 2005, IAW has grown to become a global event in the struggle for social justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people. Last year hundreds of cities around the world participated in Israeli Apartheid Week activities.

Please note that IAW organizers are focused on educational activism and are opposed to any form of race or ethnic hatred or bigotry, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

Monday, March 10: Meeting of Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty

Time: 6:30pm
Location: Offices of the Sudbury and District Labour Council (Suite 209 upstairs in 109 Elm Street, which is across the street from the Native Friendship Centre)
 
The venue is wheelchair accessible. Children are welcome to attend, or childcare support is available upon request.
 
S-CAP is a direct-action anti-poverty organization based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We provide direct-action support work assisting individuals in their struggles with welfare and ODSP, housing, employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order to meet their needs. In addition, we mount campaigns against and support educational work about regressive government policies as they effect working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of people to organize themselves. We believe in the power of resistance!
 
La coalition contre la pauvreté de Sudbury (S-CAP) est un organisme d’action directe luttant contre la pauvreté. Elle se trouve à Sudbury en Ontario.
 
Le travail de la coalition se base dans l’action directe et consiste à apporter de l’aide aux individus dans leurs luttes pour l’assistance sociale, l’invalidité, le logement, l’emploi et à les aider à faire face aux gens qui leur refusent ce à quoi ils ont droit pour rencontrer leurs besoins. De plus, la coalition fait des compagnes de sensibilisation et de dénonciation par rapport aux politiques gouvernementales régressives quant à leurs effets sur les travailleurs et travailleuses et les personnes vivant dans la pauvreté.
 
La coalition croit au pouvoir des personnes de s’organiser elles-mêmes; elle croit au pouvoir de la résistance!

Monday, March 10: Organizing Meeting for Solidarity Against Austerity March

Time: 7:30pm
Location: Offices of the Sudbury and District Labour Council (Suite 209 upstairs in 109 Elm Street, which is across the street from the Native Friendship Centre)

The provincial budget is coming out in the spring, and we're already planning our Solidarity Against Austerity 3 pre-budget march and rally! Our next organizing meeting is on March 10, and anybody who is interested is welcome to attend.

This event would be held under the banner of the Raise the Rates campaign, calling for major increases in social assistance rates and for minimum wage. But there are many others affected by our government's austerity agenda as well! The event could include the struggles of the labour movement, First Nations, students, and other community groups against the austerity agenda.

We must work together to be effective against austerity, and we are hoping that anybody and everybody who is invested in any of these issues will come out to the meeting.

Callout for Sudburians Who Want to Go To "Raise the Rates" Action in Toronto on March 22

The Raise the Rates campaign is organizing a march and rally on Saturday, March 22 against the Liberal Convention in Toronto. CUPE is organizing bussing for people to get to and from Toronto.
