We will be talking to the councillors, giving them information, and raising our demands with them and asking them to raise these at the City Council meeting. These demands are:
- the need to extend the hours of the Out of the Cold shelter and to ensure it stays open until the end of March. The need to have non-Salvation Army staff at the shelter.
- the need to maintain the former provincial Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) policies and funding levels in the downloaded to the City Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI) funding. This means that exceptional circumstances funding must be available to people who have bed bug infestations even if they do not move. This means they would be eligible for the full $800 for an individual or $1,500 for a family with children.
- the need to end the discriminatory reviews of Handi-Transit users. People with non-physical disabilities must be eligible for Handi-Transit and the "at capacity" argument should not be being used to deny people needed services.

And CLS writes:
This email is about the recent changes to Handi-transit which will eliminate access to those who have cognitive impairment, learning disabilities, Alzheimer's, and autism spectrum. Previously, with a note from a doctor, Handi-transit was available for those with these non-walking related disabilities. But now, eligibility is decided by a physiotherapist who tests a person's ability to climb stairs and walk. Obviously, this method of selection has left a gap in service for some of our City's most vulnerable who cannot take regular transit.
Council has to correct the gap created by these changes.
I’ve collected the names and contact information of a few groups and people (see below) who are concerned about the changes made to Handi-transit access. I’m probably missing some so please forward this to anyone you know who is also concerned.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
1.) We will be at the first Council meeting Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6pm to show support for changes needed in Handi-transit eligibility so that those with non-physical limitations can use it again.
I propose we wear green or a green ribbon to indicate our group is there because of Handi-transit. I will be emailing Council ahead of time so they know what is going on. Hope to see you Tuesday.
2.) Please send an email to Council and Mayor before Tuesday indicating your concerns, your personal stories and that a change is needed now. Just copy and paste all the emails below into the To: section of your email.
Your email can be as simple as:
Council needs to change the mandate of Handi-transit so that those with non-physical disabilities can have use of it again.

The site for the Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op has been archived and will no longer be updated. Please visit the main Media Co-op website to learn more about the organization.
The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
