To date over 250 campuses across North America have joined the movement to divest from fossil fuels, with 4 schools already having announced plans to divest. The day of action follows the release of a report by the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives that highlights the danger of Canada’s “Carbon Bubble” for pension funds and other investments.
QUOTES:
“Fossil Fuel investments are bad for the environment and they exacerbate poverty. As well, more and more financial analysts, economists and banks are coming out and warning us that fossil fuels are on the way out, and their market values are on the way down, it’s time to invest in real solutions and get out of the business of climate change. To transition to renewable energy, we need to stop investing in more fossil fuel infrastructure,” says Pamela Charron.
“The barriers to transitioning to a low carbon economy are mainly social and political not technological or economic. Universities are meant to be crucibles of change and they should be leading the way. LU should divest. It might improve their ranking on the MacLean’s University rankings system, as ethical investments may soon become one of the criteria by which universities will be judged,” according to Cathy Orlando, National Manager of Citizens Climate Lobby.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
