TEDx returns to Sudbury

TEDxYouth@NickelCity speakers to promote a ‘shift’ in innovation
Sudbury, Ont. – TEDxYouth@NickelCity will be returning to Sudbury for a second year.

Date: April 27, 2013
Time: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Where: Vale Cavern, Science North

What: Greater Sudbury’s own TED-like event, the world-renowned speakers’ exposition, will be returning with a theme of “SHIFT: Prepare to be moved”.

Created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading", TEDxYouth@NickelCity has gathered the city’s leading thinkers and doers to explore disruptive innovations, ideas and perspectives that are shifting the community locally, nationally and globally.

During this day of inspired thinking, the audience will hear from extraordinary visionaries, who are challenging the experience of the Greater Sudbury region today and shifting how people experience it tomorrow.

People interested in attending can pre-register at Science North or by visiting the official website,
http://tedxyouthnickelcity.com.

Together with young inquisitive minds, and local thought leaders, TEDxYouth@NickelCity hopes to inspire deep discussions and conversations on ideas that shift thinking, disrupt the status quo and empower youth and all citizens to engage in making the community and the world a better place, and to go beyond the obvious.

Important Notes

Please note that TEDx event organizers are not able to speak for the TED Conference. Any inquiry
regarding TED itself should be sent to:
Melody Serafino
TEDxPR@groupsjr.com

While we appreciate coverage for the TEDxYouth event, we kindly ask that all journalists and/or bloggers be respectful of the difference between the TED and TEDx brands. Please note that the ‘x’ in ‘TEDx’ stands for “independently organized event.” Any headline or text which implies “TED” is coming to Sudbury is misleading.

About TEDx

In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxYouth@NickelCity, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxYouth@NickelCity, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, is self-organized by youth and entrepreneurs in the community.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

For information about TED's upcoming conferences, visit http://www.ted.com/registration. Follow TED on Twitter at http://twitter.com/TEDTalks, or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/TED.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
