NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVAL BORÉAL: A MUSICAL TOUR-DE-
FORCE IN NORTHERN ONTARIO

SUDBURY, ON – Northern Lights Festival Boréal is right around the corner! Being
held in its traditional home on the shores of Lake Ramsey, the fest is ready to kick off
the summer for the 42nd year! The event is quickly approaching, this weekend: July 5-
7, 2013. Festival headliners include Buck 65, Friday; The Good Family as a daytime
headliner Saturday; The Good Brothers opening for Kathleen Edwards Saturday
evening and rounding off the weekend is Serena Ryder Sunday night.

Buck 65, Friday July 5 , 10:30pm
One of Canada‟s most innovative hip-hop artists, Buck 65 travels the world alone and
collects books and movies and stories that haven‟t been told yet. Buck 65‟s music
started out as hip hop, and there‟s still a strong whiff of that tradition, but it has evolved
into something else. Sometimes it sounds rural. Sometimes it sounds like something
fished out of a drain pipe. He wishes it sounded like a Terrence Malick film or a Max
Ernst painting. Now no one knows what to call it. Buck 65 raps, sings, makes beats,
plays instruments and DJs, but is best known for his dancing. He is also the wildly
popular host of CBC Radio 2‟s great afternoon show, Drive.

The Good Family, Saturday July 6 , 3:00pm
A family show with a family band! For the first time ever NLFB is featuring a daytime
headliner, so grab the whole family and head out to the fest! The Good Family is
comprised of The Good Brothers and members of The Sadies, both known for their
simple, straight from the heart music and their high energy performances.

The Good Brothers, Saturday July 6 , 9:30pm
A return engagement from performers of the 3rd NLFB, The Good Brothers have
gained a worldwide audience over the course of their accomplished career. Twins
Bruce and Brian, along with kid brother Larry, knew they were destined for something
bigger than their suburban Toronto roots. Formed in the early 1970s from Kinfolk and
then a stint with James Ackroyd, the Good Brothers‟ first gig was at legendary Toronto
club The Riverboat, on May 14, 1974.They played simple music, straight from the
heart that encompassed country, bluegrass, folk, and the occasional taste from the
rock and roll songbook. Fiddle tunes flowed as did cover songs, highlighted by Larry‟s
banjo breaks, Bruce‟s autoharp, their unique sibling harmonies, and enough on-stage
energy to burn down the cornfield.

Kathleen Edwards, Saturday July 6 , 10:30pm
Kathleen Edwards is one of Canada‟s premiere singer-songwriters. She began
playing music at a very young age, learning violin at five years old: and instrument that
would stay with her for life. The release of her debut album „Failer‟ found her opening
for Willie Nelson, John Prine, Aimee Mann, My Morning Jacket, John Mayer and
Bryan Adams. Her next two albums „Back to Me‟ and „Asking for Flowers‟ both made
the Billboard 200 list and reached the top 10 of the Top Heatseekers chart. In 2012
her fourth album „Voyageur‟ became the first to crack the top 100 and top 40 in the
US, reaching #2 in Canada. Produced by Edwards and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the
album made the 2012 short list for the Polaris Prize.

Serena Ryder, Sunday July 7 , 10:30pm
Topping the charts this summer Serena Ryder is coming to stompa‟ with
Sudbury! Serena returns to the festival after a great packed concert in 2009. The
recipient of three JUNO Awards and two gold albums, this year Ryder unveiled
her most personal and ambitious album yet. The result is „Harmony‟ – robust,
passionate, optimistic, adventurous, haunting and addictive. “‟Harmony‟ is my
journey...my past, my present, my future and all the ugly and beautiful things that
I‟ve had the pleasure of experiencing so far in my short life here,” shares Serena.
Her latest singles 'Stompa' and 'What I Wouldn‟t Do' have achieved runaway
success dominating the airwaves across the country.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
