MFM & SSO Present an Intimate Evening of Film & Music

Collaboration brings Academy Award Winning Film & Live Concert Together

Sudbury, ON Oct. 28: Samuel L. Jackson, communist China and a few of Sudbury’s finest classical musicians may seem like an odd collection, but they’ll all be coming together this Saturday in a unique fusion of different art forms.

Using a screening of the Academy Award-winning film, The Red Violin as a focal point, the Sudbury Symphony along with Music and Film in Motion, are offering up an evening of both live music and Canadian made film.  Dawn Cattapan, Executive Director of the Sudbury Symphony, calls it “a natural alliance.”

“It’s our first collaboration, and special way to bridge our two different art mediums into one special night,” she said. “With Halloween just passed, it will be one last treat for both the eyes and ears.”

Starring Jackson in the role of an art appraiser, The Red Violin follows a very special 17th century instrument through 300 years of history to a modern-day auction house in Montreal. During this time,  the violin passes through many different people, from a child prodigy in Austria to a gypsy fiddler; an English virtuoso to a Chinese music teacher in the midst of a cultural revolution in communist China.  In his review, Roger Ebert gave the film 3.5/4 stars, calling it “something for everyone: music and culture, politics and passion, crime and intrigue, history and even the backstage intrigue of the auction business.”

The evening begins at 7:00pm at College Boréal’s Concert Hall, located at 21 Lasalle Blvd, with a concert featuring musicians of the Sudbury Symphony. Following the film screening, local filmmaker Benjamin Paquette, and local composer Dan Bedard join SSO musician, Jane Russell, in a curated discussion by Music and Film in Motion.  The entire evening will be hosted by CBC’s Jenifer Norwell.

Guests who purchased a reception ticket will have the opportunity to meet and mingle following the event at Au Pied du Rocher, also located at College Boréal. Tickets are available for $40 ($10 for the reception) through the orchestra’s box office by phoning 705.673.1280 or visiting sudburysymphony.com.

About the Sudbury Working Group

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
