Cambrian College competes in CANstruction competition for charity
SUDBURY – Cambrian College is set to compete in this year’s CANstruction building competition. The week-long event pits students, staff and faculty against one another in an attempt to build the most creative and impressive structure – made entirely from food cans.
Cambrian teams will compete against students from Laurentian University’s School of Architecture for bragging rights. Each team received $1,000 with which to purchase non-perishable food supplies for their construction projects. All food, as well as pledges, will be donated to the Sudbury Food Bank.
Cambrian College is entering three teams this year, including one comprised of faculty and support staff, including Sonia Del Missier, Acting President; Sherrill McCall, Dean of the School of Engineering Technology; Geoffrey Dalton, Director of Cambrian International; Professors Jeffrey Walker, Brent Eckert and David Willcock; as well as support staff Dan Walsh and Christine Greffe. They have already raised $900 in pledges.
“This is a good team-building exercise for the students, as well as staff,” Walker says. “It also gets them involved in their community. It’s important for them to know what’s going on in their community and to be active members of society. It’s a volunteer project, which was important to me, and it helps nurture a strong work ethic.”
Cambrian’s staff team will merge the College logo with Facebook’s Like symbol to create a structure measuring roughly seven feet tall and 10 feet long, while the College’s other two teams work to recreate a Tim Hortons Roll-Up-the-Rim-to-Win cup and LEGO characters, respectively.
“It’s an interesting engineering challenge, and helps the students to develop strategic planning and critical thinking skills – they’ve had to conceptualize, plan and organize everything for their projects,” Walker adds.
This year’s CANstruction competition is sponsored by the Lougheed family and staff, Laurentian University, National Grocers Cash & Carry, Fontaine & Associates Inc., the New Sudbury Centre and EastLinkTV.
CANstruction runs from March 8-15, 2014 at the New Sudbury Centre. The timeline is as follows:
Saturday, March 8: Prep work begins for the official build from 6-8 p.m.
Sunday, March 9: Official build day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Structures will be on display during mall hours and the public is invited to visit, ask questions and vote (voting will be done by QR code).
Friday, March 14: CANstruction wrap-up at the Sudbury Food Bank from 4-6:30 p.m. Entrance by complimentary ticket only. Winners will be announced to team representatives.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
