Friends of Sudbury Transit Sunday Commuter Challenge for Candidates completed this past Sunday
This past Sunday was the final installment of the Friends of Sudbury Transit's Commuter Challenge for Candidates. All candidates were asked to take the bus downtown and meet across the street from the bus station at 1:30pm on either Sunday, September 14 or 28. The Sunday commuter challenge was meant to raise awareness in candidates of the importance of transit to many Sudburians and how Sunday service isn’t convenient for many who need to work, shop, attend church, or visit family and friends. Routes are not the same as during the week and service is infrequent.
One candidate told us about a friend whose teenage son worked at the New Sudbury mall on Sunday’s, finished work at 5pm but couldn’t take a bus back to the Valley because the last one was at 4pm. Another candidate spoke about how students waited for an hour for a bus because it leaves campus just before classes end in the evening. Many candidates have been knocking on doors and hearing that people want better Sunday service. Friends of Sudbury Transit has made improving Sunday service one of our top priorities for change.

• Increased physical activity
• Traffic congestion reduction
Transit connects workers to jobs in outlying and industrial areas, improves business productivity, stimulates economic development around bus stops, reduces energy consumption, achieves clean air standards and generates jobs.
Friends of Sudbury Transit asks the next council and Mayor to make transit a priority for our City and citizens.
