CLEANER CREEK CAUSES CLEANUP CANCELLATION
This year the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee cancelled its annual fall cleanup because of a lack of garbage.
Every fall since 2000 the committee has enlisted the help of community volunteers to help cleanup areas along Junction Creek. Since 2008 they have been concentrating on the area along the New Sudbury Shopping Centre.
This year there is not enough garbage to ask a large number of volunteers for help. Instead the group has enlisted the help of volunteers with Canada World Youth to cleanup this section and other areas of the creek that are less accessible.
The annual fall cleanups are one of many cleanups done by volunteer groups. Through the Adopt-a-Creek program 15 community groups have committed to keeping a section of Junction Creek clean. Cleanups used to be done annually, but lately groups have needed to go out less frequently. Some of these groups are now helping out with other projects, such as tree planting, removing invasive species or bioengineering along their adopted section of Junction Creek. The lack of garbage means that the committee can concentrate on other restoration activities in the Junction Creek watershed.
While the stewardship committee is finding less garbage every year there are still problem areas. Fallen trees collect unsightly garbage. Deep sections of the creek are also difficult to clean. The committee is committed to partnering with the City of Greater Sudbury to help tackle these areas.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
