CARFAC Ontario’s director visits Open Studio
SUDBURY – Kristian Clarke, Ontario director of Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC) will be at the Open Studio on Saturday, November 22. Clarke will lecture on CARFAC’s artist’s advocacy, such as copyright and artist's resale rights, and its recent Supreme Court victory requiring the National Gallery of Canada to negotiate minimum artist fees. The presentation is coordinated in conjunction with Cambrian College’s Business of the Arts course and will be open to the public free of charge.
“We believe that artists, like professionals in other fields, should be paid for their work and share equitably in profits from their art practice,” said Clarke. “CARFAC Ontario is here to develop policies, publications and services that assist artists, galleries, curators, art patrons and other stakeholders in creating an economic climate that benefits all visual artists.”
On May 14, 2014, CARFAC members successfully pleaded their case to the Supreme Court to try and negotiate standards for the payment of artists – similar to a minimum wage.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
