Please come out and join the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee in releasing trout!
The JCSC invites the public to attend their 7th Annual Festival this Saturday, May 23rd from 11-1pm at the Twin Forks Playground on Gary Ave.
Over the last few years, the group has been releasing trout at the Adanac site but has gone back to the original area along the creek that the trout were first released.
"This area is better for the fish, says Sarah Woods, research manager with the committee. "The stream is smaller in this location, it has some groundwater inputs, and the overhanging plants shade the creek and keep the temperatures cool for the trout."
“We actually held our first trout releases here. The support we are getting from the Ward 8 CAN and the revamped facilities make this a great choice for this year’s event.”
There will be lots of activities for everyone from meeting live turtles to identifying some of the aquatic bugs that call the creek home. Festival attendees will also help increase the plant biodiversity by making “seed bombs.” These clay vessels are filled with wildflower seeds and can be planted in areas that lack native plant species.
The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee (JCSC) was formed in 1999 with the mission to “restore all life to the Junction Creek ecosystem: native wildlife, insect and plant life, and to improve the quality of life for humans as well.”
They have been reintroducing brook trout into the waterway in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources since 2000.
The hatchery-raised trout are provided as a donation from the OMNR. Members of the public are asked to keep an eye out for brook trout in the stream, and to let the group know if they see one.
The festival will run Saturday May 23 from 11am to 1pm. It is free to attend. For more information contact info@junctioncreek.com or 705-525-8736

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
