Sudbury District Community Garden Network in need of volunteers for upcoming programming and events
SUDBURY- Sudbury District Community Garden Network, part of Sudbury’s Foodshed Project, is seeking volunteers to assist with Seed Start Programming in local schools and garden events throughout the 2017 growing season.
The not-for-profit Foodshed Project which houses Sudbury’s Community Garden Network is hoping to recruit a new roster of volunteers who are ready to get their hands dirty by offering their time to help deliver Seed Starting programs to school aged children and assist with events being planned at numerous community gardens throughout the city in 2017. With a desire to link more schools, children, and families to their neighbourhood gardens than ever before, those who have been involved with this programming in the past are offering training to new volunteers and are developing an educational seed-starting toolkit which will guide even the “greenest” of green thumbs throughout the seed-starting process. Linda Hachez & Rachelle Niemela are some of the volunteers who have been offering this program in schools for many years. “The students learn to care for the plants, transplant them, then plant them outside. They are taught to be attentive to the needs of the plant, to be mindful of the frost dates, feeding and watering the plants, all while being respectful of the environment, other people and living things.”
In addition, volunteers are needed for the events that several community gardens will be hosting this summer & fall. “We want to reach out to everyone living near the gardens. These events will be held to connect people to soil, seeds, plants, and to each other using the community garden spaces as educational mini-hubs.” Dates, times, and locations of these events will be firmed up in the coming weeks.
If you would like to become a volunteer to deliver seed-starting programming in schools and/or to volunteer for upcoming garden events please contact info@foodshedproject.ca, or call Leigh Anne at705-920-3033.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
