MEDIA RELEASE: Public Blown Away by Local Youth Talent
Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.
On Saturday, May 6 th Volunteer Sudbury partnered up with Independent Living Sudbury and Manitoulin to host the first annual Youth Art Showcase. The project was part of Volunteer Sudbury’s Change the World Campaign, an initiative aimed at encouraging youth to volunteer their time in the community.
The Youth Art Showcase was a youth led event and featured works of art from a number of young artists in the community, a free hot dog lunch and live entertainment. The public event was planned as a way to show high-school students that there is not a single “right way” to volunteer their time, and that they can contribute to the community through their talents, skills, and interests.
“I’m so happy to be able to shine a spotlight on the talented youth of Sudbury. I wanted this to be an opportunity for young artists to show themselves off to our community and I truly believe they didthat,” explained Thomas Pouta, a grade 11 student from LoEllen Park Public School who played a largepart in making the event a reality.
The public was invited to stop by the Independent Living Centre on Durham Street to enjoy performances from high-school aged individuals, participate in karaoke, eat a free lunch, and view the exceptional talent of youth artists from the Sudbury community.
“It has been really incredible to see what these students have made happen when we put the responsibility in their hands. Through our Change the World Campaign we asked them what theywanted to do to encourage volunteerism in the community and we have not been disappointed!” explained Kiara Vallier, Program Manager at Volunteer Sudbury. “They all work so hard despite having amillion things going on at school, home and work. I could not be more proud of each of them.”
The event was such a huge success that talks between Volunteer Sudbury and Independent Living are now taking place to discuss making it an annual event.
