Launch the gardening season with a film screening and community discussion on the biodiversity of seeds and the future of our food. You are invited to SEED: The Untold Story, May 24
Here’s something to think about while you’re planting your garden or buying your produce. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared.
You are invited to a screening of the documentary SEED: The Untold Story. Hear the story of farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers rekindling our connection to seeds, and fighting a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food.
The screening will take place Wednesday, May 24, 7:00 p.m. in Laurentian University's School of Education amphitheatre (rm SE-111), on Athletic Building Road, just off South Bay Road (next to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $10.00 to help cover event costs. Find out more at: http://www.liveablesudbury.org/seed_screening.
After the screening there will be a community discussion and Q&A with four local panelists who will share their reflections on the film and their knowledge:
- Fionna Tough of the Flour Mill Community Farm will speak to urban agriculture
- Peggy Baillie of Three Forks Farm will share seed saving skills for a northern climate
- Stuart McCall of McGrows Farms and Gardens will talk about heritage varieties
- Colleen Zilio of Seeds of Diversity will explain the importance of biodiversity of seeds
Come see this award winning documentary featuring Vandana Shiva, Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel. Join a lively discussion and plug into the local context and what you can do. Learn from the panelists and connect with local organizations.
This film presentation is hosted by Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury in association with the Sudbury Horticultural Society and the Sudbury Downtown Indie Cinema Co-op. It launches the Sudbury Gardening Festival, which offers a plethora of all things gardening on May 27, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Parkside Centre. The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
