It’s that time of year again! Jazz Sudbury Festival is approaching very quickly, being held September 6th-10th in Sudbury, Ontario. The festival is an exciting celebration of jazz music and other related styles (blues, world, fusion etc.), presented in partnership with Investors Group. Plus it’s always one swingin’ party! Feature acts for 2017 include: the world’s greatest tribute to brass-rock icons Chicago, Brass Transit; world fusion/jazz/funk outfit The Souljazz Orchestra; acclaimed jazz/pop vocalist/pianist/composer Laila Biali; vintage soul revivalist Tanika Charles, and more. ‘Jazz Passes’ are currently on-sale for the extended early bird price of $65. They are available online at jazzsudbury.com, and also at outlets including: Fromagerie Elgin (5 Cedar), Kuppajo Espresso Bar (109 Larch), Jett Landry Music (1119 Lasalle), Long & McQuade (255 King), and Gloria’s Convenience (469 Bouchard). “The Jazz Sudbury team has put together a lineup with something for everybody this year,” says Interim Festival Manager Ashlyne Botelho, “we couldn't be more excited!”
Brass Transit is the world's greatest tribute to the legendary brass-rock band Chicago. Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups, and one of the world's best-selling groups of all time, having sold more than 100 million records. Their finely crafted songs fuse elements of rock n' roll, pop, jazz and orchestral. Catch Brass Transit live at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre on Friday, September 8th of JSF 2017.
Jazz Sudbury is extremely excited to welcome back The Souljazz Orchestra! Amazing players, funky rhythms, and a deep knowledge of world music styles all come together to produce an energetic and stimulating sound. Their music is a delicious fusion of soul, jazz, funk, Afrobeat and Latin styles. Dancing is guaranteed! They will play September 9th.
Award-winning Canadian pianist and vocalist Laila Biali has been garnering world-wide recognition for her music which she has performed at prestigious venues including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tokyo’s Cotton Club, and Carnegie Hall. She has toured with Grammy award winners Chris Botti, Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega, and has recorded with and supported international icon, Sting. Biali will play Saturday September 9th of JSF 2017.
CBC music calls Tanika Charles ‘the most buzzed-about soul singer in Toronto.’ In a few short years, Charles has transformed from an emerging solo artist to a commanding performer and band leader, a staple of the Canadian soul scene. Her debut album Soul Run immediately wowed the critics following its release, and has been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize and for the 2017 Juno R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Come witness her fantastic energy, her impressive vocals her red-hot band on September 8th.
Of course that’s just the beginning. Festival goers will also enjoy one of Canadian jazz’s greatest guitar innovators the Eric St-Laurent Quartet, and the beautiful vocal stylings of acclaimed singer Heather Bambrick. As is tradition, the festival continues to support local talent as well, presenting the best the city has to offer, including such artists as: Sarah Craig & Sunnyside Jazz, or guitar duo Jamie Dupuis & Zak Martel (Emerging Artist Showcase winners).
Tickets, and all festival information (including the full schedule), can be found online at: www.jazzsudbury.com or by calling 705-673-7770.

The Sudbury working-group of The Media Co-op was formed to create independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
