Sunday, March 1: Strategy and Campaign Planning Workshop with Chris Dixon

Developing strategy – building effective plans of action to win what we want – is one of the biggest challenges we face in organizing for social change. This workshop will offer tools to address this challenge, laying out a strategic organizing framework based in a campaign-planning model. This model focuses on bringing more and more people together on our side while undermining adversaries. It involves collective investigation of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in our context of struggle; a deliberate process of setting goals; an orientation toward tactical escalation; and regular practices of appreciation and evaluation. In this workshop, we will go through this model together, applying it to our current organizing work.
 
Chris Dixon, originally from Alaska and a former resident of Sudbury, is a longtime anarchist organizer, writer, and educator with a PhD from the University of California at Santa Cruz. His writing has appeared in numerous book collections as well as periodicals such as Anarchist Studies, Clamor, Left Turn, and Social Movement Studies. He serves on the board of the Institute for Anarchist Studies and the advisory board for the activist journal Upping the Anti. Dixon lives in Ottawa, Canada, on unceded Algonquin Territory, where he is involved in anti-poverty organizing. His new book is Another Politics: Talking Across Today's Transformative Movements, published by University of California Press. Find him at writingwithmovements.com.

Monday, March 2: Another Politics: Talking Across Today's Transformative Movements

Time: 10am to noon

A talk by former Sudburian Chris Dixon about his new book.

Recent decades have seen the exciting convergence of anti-authoritarian radicalism and broader-based movements in the U.S. and Canada. From this convergence, a growing set of activists – from anti-poverty organizers in Toronto to prison abolitionists in Oakland, from occupy activists in New York to migrant justice organizers in Vancouver – are developing shared politics and practices. They are building “another politics,” to use a Zapatista expression. These efforts combine anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, anti-oppression politics with grassroots organizing among ordinary, non-activist people. Drawing on interviews with organizers across North America, this presentation will explore another politics and distill lessons for building effective, visionary movements.

Facing HIV Project – Réseau ACCES Network (Stephanie Harris) will be displaying photos of people who have supported this campaign. Participants are encouraged to take their own photos holding Facing HIV signs to display in support of ending the stigma of HIV/AIDS.

How can you effectively communicate your views to elected officials? What can you do to raise issues you care about with your representatives in parliament?

I hope you can join us for reThink Green’s first workshop of 2015: a panel discussion about advocacy. In the recent by-election, Sudbury got a lot of attention from provincial and federal politicians. We hope this workshop will give you some tools to hold MPs and MPPs accountable for the promises they made and help you get issues on to their agenda. We will begin with presentations from our panelists followed by questions and discussion with the participants. Although we are focused on environmental advocacy, this experience will be valuable for everyone

We hope you'll join us afterwards at Laughing Buddha as we continue the discussion informally over dinner.

The panelists:

Brennain Lloyd has been the project coordinator with Northwatch for over 27 years. As the regional coalition in the northeast, Northwatch assists community based groups around the region to access government and policy-making processes and consultations, and provides representation based on regionally developed positions on environmental concerns and ecological protection. Northwatch has as a priority issues that are of a regional nature: sound energy planning, healthy forests, responsible mining, waste reduction, and conservation of our natural resources and environmental assets. Northwatch has worked with residents over the past two decades to prevent northeastern Ontario from becoming the receiving ground for foreign wastes, whether it’s Toronto's garbage, Ontario's biomedical waste, Canada's nuclear reactor fuel waste, or PCB's from around the world.

Cathy Orlando is a published scientist and educational author, regular contributor to the Sudbury Star and is the National Manager of Canada’s Citizens Climate Lobby as a full-time volunteer. With Citizens Climate Lobbyists across Canada and in close partnership with the USA's Citizens Climate Lobby, Cathy works passionately towards cooperatively developing progressive and comprehensive Canadian climate change policy, to be synchronized to the USA's climate policy by 2015. Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) is a growing organization of local volunteer groups (over 200) that are pressing for progressive climate legislation. They lobby our representatives and governments to support carbon fee and dividend and to end subsidies to fossil fuel companies.

Richard Eberhardt, formerly the constituency assistant to MP Glenn Thibeault, is now the Northern Ontario Organizer for the New Democratic Party of Canada. As a former reThink Green board member, he is particularly interested in environmental issues in Sudbury. A long-time political organizer in the north, Richard brings a wealth of advocacy experience from the other side of the desk.
